Care and Maintenance

Care and Maintenance tips for your Big Glam Nation ponytails, and 1-piece extensions.

  1. Detangling and Smoothing: Brush or comb your ponytail before and after wear. We recommend using wide-toothed combs or brushes, and we prefer combs. Finger de-tangling and loosening is also a great way to preserve a tangle-free and clean ponytail without damaging the root's installation to the velcro or clip-in attachment. Be gentle. Never yank or tug at your ponytail while attempting to detangle or smooth. Treat your ponytail as you would your own hair (or perhaps, even gentler). For wavier ponytails, like our Curly Ponytail, you may also consider using a soft bristle brush to enhance and restore bounciness.

"Loosening" is the best method to pair with your finger-detangling. It is generally shaking your extensions to cause tangles, and flyaway/misplaced hairs that are on the verge of becoming tangled, do drop and "loosen" before you finger-detangle. This minimizes over-manipulation of your extensions that results from any detangling method.

  2. Storing Your Hair Extensions: Avoid matting and tangling by properly storing your ponytail on a hanger or in a satin care bag (BGN Satin Hair Bags!). You can also flat lay your extensions on satin-lined shelving or in a satin-lined drawer. Avoid storing your extensions in areas regularly exposed to moisture.

  3. Applying Heat to Your Hair Extensions: BGN Ponytail and 1-Piece Extensions can withstand heat of up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. However, we don't recommend using hot styling tools on your extensions as it will permanently alter the style and texture of the extensions and wear down their lifespan. Instead, opt for buying a selection of styles that you prefer. We regularly offer bundle deals to help you curate a selection at a fantastic price.

  4. Washing Your Extensions: We recommend that you wash your ponytail as sparingly as possible in order to preserve its life span - once every 8 -10 wears is recommended assuming you're not wearing your ponytail in a potent environment (Ex: indoor smoking bars, outdoor bbq event, weather causing debris, etc.) that is likely to cause strong odor or debris to become trapped in your extensions' strands.
When washing your ponytail:
  • Fill a sink, tub,  or bowl with water. We recommend a tub or sink as this will allow you to keep the strands extended during the wash to minimize tangles. Thoroughly mix in a mild or synthetic wig shampoo and lay your ponytail across the surface of the water while holding the root attachment. Run your fingers through the ponytail, as if gently detangling, so that the shampoo water mixture penetrates, constantly keeping the strands extended and mildly on the surface. Do not rub or lather into a ball - keep the strands extended and separated as best possible.
  • Rinse the shampoo and apply a small amount of moisturizing conditioner. For best results, we recommend mixing a small amount of conditioner into the sink full of water and dipping and swaying your extensions in. Do not use heavy leave-in creams or oils.
  • Rinse your extensions while holding in an upright position under cool running water until silky smooth. Lightly detangle any knots with fingers while under the running water, if possible.
  • Squeeze excess water, shake, then lay on a dry towel and let it air dry.
  • Avoid blowdrying your extensions as this may cause a variety of tangles and damages the hair strands.
